“City of Information” Artwork (2015)

Hello! I’m glad you discovered that the piece of art you are viewing is also a QR code.

Now let me tell you a little bit about it…

City of information was created for the Oregon Society of Artists 2015 “200 for under $200” annual show. Each participant provided with a 12×12 frame and left to use their imagination.

I wanted to create something that stood out, away from the “canvas” and was multidimensional in many ways. City of Information accomplishes that in a number of ways:

  1. It has the appearance of a board game, but you can see it has another aspect in the layout of a QR code (which you have already discovered).

  2. We live in an information age, and the technological aspects of daily life have become an integral part of daily existence to the point we cannot separate society from technology.

  3. In addition to number 2, figures representing the government (castle), religion (church), business (tall spire surrounded by buildings) and social life (park) make up the key points used for the QR code to align and and recognize the QR pattern in the image, while the other aspects of life (homes, small businesses and “roads”) provide the “Data” to access where the code will take you.

I hope you enjoyed this piece of artwork, and feel a sense of satisfaction that you could see through the initial look of the piece and found some deeper meaning.
